Spring is truly here. My plants have been hibernating over the past couple of months so it’s great to see them coming alive again.I have all three sizes of the Ixora shrub which bloom continuously all year long, but are beginning to flower even more profusely right now. The long lasting blooms add a wonderful burst of colour to my garden. They prefer sun, but will tolerate a little shade.
I have a couple of the tallest variety and they are the size of small trees. They have large, pointed leaves and red-orange, grapefruit size flowers that appear in rounded clusters, of as many as sixty, at the tips of their branches.
My medium size plants have glossy, more ovate leaves and smaller flowers which are also red-orange, but I’ve also seen them in pink, yellow, and peach. They do well in my seaside garden. You will see this plant growing everywhere along the boulevards in Guayabitos. Many have been pruned into topiaries of all different shapes and sizes.
In our courtyard, we have several hedges of the dwarf variety which require little pruning, except for shaping. They have even smaller red-orange flowers and tiny leaves.
