Cute & Cuddly

These are the last two blogs that I’ll be doing from Mexico this year so I want to say " Happy Easter " to everyone.

Recently they had coloured baby chicks for sale at the tianguis.

 

Aren’t they are just too cute ?

Hopefully they will survive ‘til Easter.

I read that food colouring is injected into ordinary chicken eggs a few weeks before Easter.

Supposedly this doesn’t hurt the baby chicks, but it sure provides a psychedelic spectacle when they hatch.

The dye doesn't last much more than a couple of weeks, once the chicks' new feathers come through.

Time to Say Good Bye

Adios to Guayabitos and everything we love and will miss about this wonderful place.

Such as:  Our favourite palapa restaurants on the beach where we can sit in the sand, sip on a cerveza and have fabulous meals that don’t break the bank.

All the fun loving waiters who look after us so well.

And all the rest of the Mexican people who we’ve grown to love over the years.

The delicious, local seafood.

And all the inexpensive, fresh fruits and veggies.

The beautiful tropical flowers that bloom year round.

All the different species of palms that grow everywhere down here.

And the gorgeous sandy beach out front that goes on forever.

I shall also miss Casa Qué Sera where all the doors and windows are left open from dawn ‘til dusk every day that we’re here.

And all the magnificent sunsets that are nearly as nice as the ones back home.





 

But I know these two chairs will be waiting for us to return.

 

Because this is where we perch every single day when we're ready to sit and relax.

The Mystery of the Missing Pelicans

I saw more pelicans yesterday morning than I’ve seen all year.

Ever since we arrived, I’ve been wondering what happened to all the hundreds of pelicans we usually see on a daily basis.

Occasionally I’ve seen one or maybe two pelicans out looking for fish, but no where near as many as other years.

Everyday the fishermen throw their nets out from the beach in front of us, and usually manage to catch quite of few small fish.  The local birds are pretty smart, because as soon as they spot a bunch of guys dragging in a net, they instantly appear from nowhere.

Normally we see more pelicans clustered around the nets than any other birds, but not this year.  I’ve seen hundreds of frigates and gulls eagerly looking to be fed everyday, but virtually no pelicans until yesterday.

But then this year we’ve also seen way fewer ants and spiders and way more geckos and other small lizards than usual.

Obviously the pelicans must have found better fishing grounds elsewhere for part of this year, but I’m sure glad to see them back.  I’m really happy to see that nothing seriously bad happened to them.

Fiesta Guayabitos

This is Freddy’s party boat which is called Fiesta Guayabitos.

 

A couple of years ago Freddy’s boat got blown onto shore during a storm. This resulted in a lot of damage, but Freddy did finally get it repaired. The writing on the side of the boat says “Meyor Que Nunca” which means Better Than Ever.

 

 Fiesta Guayabitos takes passengers on daily cruises around the area and out to the islands.







The party boat usually heads out once a day on slow days and twice a day when there’s lots of Mexican tourists in town. We always know when Fiesta Guayabitos is getting close because there’s a whole lot of hooting and hollering on board. Passengers really lighten up after consuming a few of the free drinks that are included in the fare.



After the construction of Casa Qué Sera was completed, we took all our workers and their families out for a Sunday afternoon cruise on Freddy’s boat. We loaded up on buckets of fried chicken, all sorts of salads & buns, and lots of desserts & beverages. Most of crew had a great time, but a few of them couldn’t handle the roll of the boat and had to be lowered into pangas and delivered back to shore.



 The party boat also goes out every evening and after dark, it can be a pretty spectacular sight.
