The ficus is a large, stately looking tree with graceful drooping branches and glossy, dark green leaves. It looks beautiful in any setting, but is not great for small plots of land because its roots grow rapidly, invading gardens and growing under sidewalks, patios and driveways. We discovered this with the roots of a small ficus tree in our garden. 
In the jungle near the highways and beaches of Nayarit you will find many ficus growing around a central palm tree. This occurs when a bird drops a seed of the ficus onto the fronds of a palm tree. The seed germinates and the new roots spiral down, and around the palm, to reach the soil. By the time the roots ha
ve reached the ground the ficus tree is a considerable size and has become well established. Over time the ficus chokes out the palm. All different stages of this stranglehold are evident throughout the country side down here. In one of the pictures you can see that the palm trunk has finally broken away and its fronds are dead and dry. The next picture indicates just how big the roots of the ficus can grow. This portion of the tree is often used as a support pillar in homes, restaurants, etc. and enhances the beauty of any building.
