A Sky Filled With Pink Purple & Blue

This past week of Semana Santa couldn't have been more perfect for all the thousands of visitors.

The waves were nice and gentle, so we didn't hear of any drownings.

The clouds stayed away except for one day, but even on that day the sun managed to shine through occasionally.

It was basically just one sunny, hot day after another.  People either had to huddle under umbrellas or hang out in the water to escape the intense heat.

The visitors also were treated to many beautiful sunsets every night. Two nights ago, the sky was alive with this spectacular display of pink, purple and blue tones.

Yesterday afternoon we took a walk down the beach to see what Easter Sunday looked like.

There were thousands of people and even more children, from tiny little babies to young teens.  The Easter Bunny brought many of these kids brand new inflatable toys for Easter rather than chocolate eggs or bunnies.

The kids had these toys on the beach, buried in the sand, riding high on the waves and piled close by when not in use so they didn't disappear.

After a whole week of these inflatables being sold during Semana Santa, there were still countless numbers of vendors hoping to sell one last toy before the end of the day.   

These are just some of the stacks of inflatables still being carried around by the hungry vendors. 

Lugging all these toys over the sand and through the enormous crowds during Semana Santa must have been very extremely exhausting for all the vendors.

This little old lady obviously couldn't maneuver the huge bundles of inflatables, but she was still determined to earn her fair share of pesos for the family.  She carried beach mats, beach balls and small beach toys back and forth along the beach in the blistering hot sun all day long.

Today will probably be the busiest day of Semana Santa and tonight the downtown area will look like this again.  Over the weekend the entire main street of Guayabitos gets closed off to vehicles to make room for the enormous crowds that come out after dark.



We drove through Guayabitos really early this morning just to have a look around.  Last night's barricades had been taken down, but will go up again  tonight. 

Here are a few photos of what it looks like out front of us.  It actually hasn't been too bad this year.  The nice, quieter families have flocked to our section of the beach and all the hundreds of kids have been very well behaved.  They spend their days playing in the waves and having fun. There's been lots and lots of laughter, and no high pitched screeching or screaming.

The further down the beach you go, the busier and louder it gets. There are many brass bands playing the same tinny raucous music over and over again and boom boxes that blast out ear deafening songs that all have the same annoying beat and tempo.

And then there's the poor Mariachi wannabees that consistently play and sing off key.  The Mexicans seem to love all this "music," but the gringos, not so much.



The really colossal crowds congregate near the beach accesses and down by the hotel zone.

The Mexicans may be packed together like sardines on the beach, on the boats and around the hundreds of popup taco stands, but they really and truly enjoy themselves.  The more the merrier it seems! Semana Santa is one big party from beginning to end.
