Angie cuts my hair about every 3 weeks because it grows so fast down here. The cost of these frequent haircuts doesn’t exactly break the bank though. My haircut will set me back 50 pesos or about $5. Angie charges more than anyone else in town, but she’s worth the splurge. She’s also trained to do pedicures, manicures, acrylics and massages, but is usually kept busy cutting hair. Angie’s Salon de Belleza is air conditioned and sparkling clean so there’s always a lineup.
In one of the pictures you can see Angie cutting someone’s curly hair which is not the easiest task to take on, but she’s doing a great job. In another picture she’s cutting my friend’s hair. Susan and Larry live across the street from us. You can see that Larry is patiently waiting for his wife to be done. We suggested that he could maybe have Angie lop off his ponytail, but he’d have no part of it. He actually looks really good with a ponytail and it would have been a shame to see it go.
Fabi, short for Fabiola, works with Angie and does my pedicures. She is the one with the red hair. Her pedicures take nearly two hours and she does a fabulous job for 120 pesos or about $12. All her tools are properly sanitized and she uses quality foot care lotions and potions.
Patricia, my masseuse, is the lady standing beside the painting. I think she’s from the old school where you were expected to keep a poker face while posing for the camera. She is usually smiling and happy and reminds me of “Aunt Jemima”. She is very religious and quite conservative so doesn’t wear any makeup or jewelry except for tiny gold earrings. She goes to church regularly and certainly doesn’t drink or smoke. Every Friday she rides her bike from Peñita to our casa and massages my bod for an hour and a half. She charges 200 pesos an hour or about $20. Even though she has really tiny hands and short fingers, she manages to work her magic. Most of our guests have enjoyed an hour or so of Patricia’s time.
Then there’s Martha, the lady in the red and white striped shirt, who’s doing a fill for someone. She works as a secretary for the school board during the day and does acrylic nails after work and on weekends. She’s by far the best at doing acrylics so I have a regular bi-weekly appointment with her. She charges 120 pesos for a fill or about $12. Martha has been on her own for many years, working two jobs, and has managed to send her two children and a niece to technical school or university. Any extra money is spent on clothes and shoes for herself. She has approximately 200 pairs of beautiful, quality shoes (still in their boxes) in her closet. She’s always impeccably dressed. A couple of weeks ago I arrived a little early for my appointment and found a nice looking gentleman sitting at her counter. It looks like she’s finally found a man who can live up to her standards. The sparkle in her eye tells the whole story.
